3 of the most wearable SS17 bag trends

Mango buckle leather bag, £35.99

For me the handbag is key to every great look. It’s the finishing touch, the closing curtain if you want; the sartorial cherry on top (couldn’t resist a cliché). And it’s why my own personal collection of totes is currently exploding through every room in our house.

But, when it comes to choosing a bag, where do you start? Each season we’re bombarded with a plethora of new-fangled trends: fringed delights from Coach and Armani, metallics at Chanel and even teddy bear bags at Moschino. Gah! What to choose?

Well, if in doubt, stick to practical. And no – this does not have to mean boring! If you live a busy life (who doesn’t?) you want something that will work with you, not against you (pom-poms caught in train doors isn’t a great look). But trust me, there are many other sleek options in a variety of colours, buttery soft leathers, and buy-me-now designs.

Here are the 3 biggest most wearable trends for SS17. (Purses at the ready!):

1. crossbody

Unquestionably one of my all-time favourite styles. It’s easy; thrown across your body it offers an aura of relaxed sophistication. Even over posh frocks, the crossbody bag just works, so much so, Matches Fashion has a whole section dedicated just to this modern day tote.

2. backpack

Whoever made the humble rucksack a style essential needs an honorary mention. Er… so thank you Burberry and Fendi. I mean, come on, it’s practical, good for your back; sporty yet smart, youthful yet kinda ageless. What’s not to love?

3. drawstring

Who remembers these from the ’90s? (*whispers* – me!) However, this cinched throwback number made a serious impact on the runways at Saint Laurent, Marc Jacobs and Givenchy and it’s about to do the same on your wardrobe. It’s everything the cross body bag is, with an added dose of quirkiness. We like.
