I confess I’ve always had a love for the art deco period ever since I read The Great Gatsby and Tender is the Night as a teen (even more so when I added these beautiful deco-inspired Coralie-Bickford Smith designed Penguin hardback covers to my book collection). The glamorous, hedonistic, champagne-swilling set of Jazz era Americans that F. Scott Fizgerald so expertly depicted in his novels were thrilling to me and whilst I can’t go back in time and rub shoulders with the rich and famous on the Riviera, I figure I can bring a bit of their style and glamour into my home.
Which is why I’m in a ‘flap’ (sorry!) that so many of my favourite high street home stores are giving a nod to that period with shades of luxurious ’20s and ’30s interior glamour slipping seamlessly into their collections. Think rich jewel colours, geometric designs, theatrical material contrasts of velvet, glass and high gloss and decadent bar accessories for last season’s drinks trollies.
So make like Greta Garbo, pour a glass of fizz and your home can be somewhere you can truly enjoy being ‘left alone’ in with my 3 shop edit of art deco home accessories.
They’ve been dabbling in deco for the last couple of seasons with their sumptuous velvet sofas, bar trolleys and Hollywood style dinnerware – and this season they’ve added to the accessories with some more pieces including this utterly divine Hollywood Deco tea set.
Velvet furniture, geometric shapes and luxurious mirrored surfaces all give a distinct nod to the deco period in Swoon Editions stylish interiors selection for this season.
House of Fraser have gone all out flapper with interior accessories that could’ve been stolen from F.Scott and Zelda Fizgerald’s house themselves. Think delightfully deco fan prints, glamorous pendant chandeliers and dinnerware.
