There’s absolutely no denying – as the rain beats against my office window – that the warm haze of summer has melted away. This morning I found myself shivering in a fine knit sweater, cursing myself for not grabbing a coat. And then I realised that, since our recent house move, all my coats are still packed in boxes labelled ‘winter’. Not anticipating this sudden dive into cold, I hadn’t even considered unpacking – hell, I’ve only just defeated the formidable mound of summer washing.
But this is where we’re at: it is officially coat season. A joyous period of time where you can wear whatever the heck you want and hide it all under a beautiful, luxurious layer of expertly tailored material. And while I know I have a few classic numbers hiding away in those boxes, the latest styles to hit the high street are doing their very best to tempt me into a naughty AW17 splurge. There’s checks, pops of colour from reds through to pinks, sports-luxe puffers, over-size trenches and glamorous faux-fur detailing. Oh the temptation is too much. So yes, my search has begun and here’s my top picks from 3 stores nailing the latest outerwear trends…
I’ve recently been lured back to Warehouse; its edit of floral dresses, easy knits and chic tailoring feels modern, effortless and grown-up. This season the brand has enlisted the incredibly stylish fashion writer, Pandora Sykes, to highlight her favourite pieces and with each selection almost selling out, she’s definitely added to the appeal and that goes for outwear, too.

Quality is exactly what you get from Ted Baker. The cut of the coats and jackets is impeccable and enhances the timeless feel of each piece. A little more expensive, yes, but well worth the pennies when you’re still wearing your buy in years to come.
This is where the fun comes in. In theory Miss Selfridge is for a young market, but having chatted to the women behind the label, it’s also for those young at heart. I’ll take that! I mean, what’s not to love about a yellow coat when the clouds are grey?!
