from babymoon to familymoon

I’ve finally came to terms with it: luxury holidays to the Maldives are out and modest adventuring en famille is the mode de jour.

Whilst expecting Miss IG, the hubby and I indulged in a wonderful long haul retreat to Thailand with some of our closest pals, followed a couple of months later by a tour of adults-only chateaus in France. Babymoon bliss and provider of many treasured pre-baby marital memories.

This time we knew we wanted to grab some down time before the all-consuming arrival of our newborn; but the logistics of how and where – taking into consideration the requirements of our rampaging toddler – stumped us. Did we really want to travel far? If we went alone would we regret not taking our little girl? How much did we want to spend?

After much agonising we reached our conclusion: make life simple. A luxury beachside break was parked in favour of an accessible staycation in the heart of the Cotswolds with Character Cottages.  Sun-lounger lazing was replaced with excursions to local farms and parks, fine dining substituted with home cooked food and a film in front of a roaring fire. The cottage allowed for flexible family living and a home-away-from-home atmosphere simply not achievable in a hotel.

Sun-lounger lazing was replaced with excursions to local farms and parks.

And you know what? It was the perfect decision. Rather than an album of romantic moments, we collected precious snap-shots of time with our little girl. Forever memories of when we were a family of three, learning the ropes together and wondering just how the addition of a fourth would evolve things once more.
So go forth fellow two-timers – pare back and embrace the home turf Family Moon. It’s a surprisingly satisfying revelation!
