the new musical must-see: Aladdin

I’m a huge musical theatre geek and was super excited about taking the kids to see Aladdin for my 40th birthday (I love my kids very much, but my actual party is adults only!) Like a Christmas pantomime on steroids, this show – that’s currently packing people in at the Prince Edward theatre – was nothing short of spectacular. With glamour and glitz a-plenty, the jewel in this show’s crown was undoubtedly Tony-award winning James Monroe Iglehart whose big-voiced, bright blue Genie of the lamp completely bedazzled us. He even received a standing ovation from the audience in the middle of the first act with Friend Like Me. Easy-going (and easy on-the-eye) Aladdin lead the cast brilliantly. The big sword sequence and silly jokes kept my somewhat cynical 7 year old son super happy, a breathtakingly romantic magic carpet moment with Jasmine made Cece totally starry-eyed and I think my husband was pretty gazing at the princess too.  All in all it’s a mystical, magical musical that’s a real family must-see.
