I’m yet to visit Ibiza, but it’s on my bucket list – along with every other person I speak to. Perhaps it’s the impending surge of ‘big’ birthdays. The one question I get asked time and time again is, ‘what should I wear?’ Even Ali asked me it before her recent jaunt to the Balearic isle.
Why? Because with a trip to Ibiza brings the desire to look good. No. Stuff that. To look incredible. Much like the phoenix rising from the ashes, there’s a need to leave behind the everyday version of ourselves and become this beautiful, bohemian free spirit.
And, while I’ve not personally watched the sun set under the sails of Café Del Mar, I still know a thing or two about holiday style, so this is what I advised Ali…
Think about the look you’d like to achieve: boho beauty or glam clubber.
Remember, the key is to appear effortless (take it from me, effortless is another word for meticulously planned). The best way to achieve this is by styling your outfits before your trip. Lay out each ensemble, along with shoes and accessories. Not only will this limit fashion panics on your hols, it will also help to avoid over packing.
By day you will need a fabulous swimsuit or bikini – the one-piece is hot right now (go to Boden and Solid & Striped), a floaty cover-up or chic kaftan, denim cut-offs or tasselled shorts and lace-up sandals. When accessorizing, sunglasses and layered jewellery are key to this mediterranean look. Think colourful friendship bracelets, bangles, charm necklaces and lots of rings. A floppy hat will top off that ‘I-come-here-all-the-time’ vibe.
Stick to embroidered dresses and vintage-inspired prints and you won’t go wrong. Vibrant colours against neutral basics, neon pom-poms and tassels, baskets or cross-body bags will all see you through your hedonistic getaway.
By night, unless you’re with the mini-skirted party crew, the guise is again very laid-back. If it’s all about chilled-out cocktails as the sun goes down, go for billowing maxi dresses, printed jumpsuits, flared trousers and loose cami tops. It’s basically festival fashion with added sparkle and a sun tan. Heading to a club? Get playful in a playsuit.
When it comes to heels, this is one place you really don’t need them. But throw them in if you’re like Ali and still want the glam factor.
Now, who’s taking me in their suitcase?
